Ive got a hot Hawaii travel tip for you.

If youve never been to the Big Island of Hawaii, youve just got to go and see it for yourself.

There are two distinct sides of the island, each with its own unique flavour and topography.

The first time we went to Hawaii, in the late 1970s, we stayed for two nights in a hotel in Hilo and then rented a motor home for the remainder of the two weeks there.

It was a great way to go.

Wed never been to Hawaii and had no idea of where we would want to spend time. The purpose of the motor home was to allow us to travel all around the island seeing all the sights, beaches and deciding where we would like to visit on future trips.

Before going on the trip, we hadnt done any research and we traveled across the northern part of the island, through the Parker Ranch. (its huge and its just one great big pasture)

The next thing we came upon were cactus! What? Cactus on the island of Hawaii? The Kona side of the island is desert like and the lava thats strewn around makes it look like youre on the moon.

It was a total surprise to us.

We stayed on the Kona side a few days enjoying the most perfect weather you could ask for along with getting to know some of the Hawaiian people.

It was a wonderful experience seeing Black Sand Beach, Green Sand Beach and eating breakfast at the Volcano House. (that was our first taste of the wonderful Hawaiian Sweet Bread that weve grown to love so much)

When we turned in the motor home and flew off to spend the rest of the vacation in hotels, we thought this would be a great Hawaii travel tip to pass along to others.

Rent a motor home and see all you can take in during your first trip so youll know where you really want to spend time the next time you return…and you will return, I guarantee it./pbr

5 Tips to Planning Your Holiday Travel With Your Tax Strategy in Mind

With the holidays right around the corner, many of us are making holiday travel plans. As you are making your holiday travel plans, identify opportunities to integrate your holiday travel plans with your tax strategy – legally!

Tip #1

Spend more than 50% of your time during each 8-hour day on business activities and you can deduct 100% of your travel expenses. This means you can deduct all of your travel expenses if you conduct business from 8 AM to 1 PM every day, and then take the rest of the day off to visit with family and friends.

Tip #2

Travel expenses for your spouse and your children are 100% deductible if they are involved in your business and spend more than 50% of each day on business activities.

Tip #3

Create a reason that is great for your business to travel to that location. This is my favorite tip because I find when I create a great business reason to travel, my business benefits in a way that it wouldnt have without the travel.

I have many friends and family members in Utah that I like to visit as often as I can. I decided to take a business trip there a few years ago to explore the possible expansion of my rental real estate business into Utah. I spent more than 50% of each day on business activities and then I also had some personal time to visit with friends and family. My rental real estate business in Utah has doubled since then and my regular travel there is a legitimate business expense!

Tip #4

If its personal – treat it as personal. If one of your goals for a particular trip is to take a break from business, then treat that trip as personal. Trying to claim that as business travel could draw a lot of scrutiny to your legitimate travel expenses. Or if your spouse and children dont participate in the business, treat their portion of the travel expenses as personal – trying to deduct their expenses could jeopardize your portion that is legitimate.

Tip #5

Travel outside of the U.S. has a completely different set of rules. Be sure to discuss this with your tax coach before you travel.

Travel is one of my favorite deductions because it is one of those expenses that most of us already have, and when planned properly, it gives us the opportunity to increase our businesss bottom line while decreasing our tax liability.

Laptop Backup: Preparing For a Business Trip

Business trips often means taking your laptop with you. However, traveling greatly increases the risk of your laptop being stolen or damaged. Often, the files stored on the laptop are critical to the success of the trip. To make sure you have a successful trip even if your laptop is stolen or damaged, follow these guidelines:
Before the trip:
1. Make sure you have a complete backup of all the information and files on the computer. A full backup of your data should be the last thing you do before packing the computer into your bag. This backup should stay at home, as it is the ultimate fallback when disaster strikes.
2. Make a separate copy of files that you expect to need on the trip. These could be on a recordable disk or USB thumb drive. This ensures that you have access to these files even if your laptop is stolen or damaged. It also gives you some flexibility to use another computer at your destination in case you need it to access the Internet or a data projector.
This copy should preferably not go into your laptop bag. If the bag is stolen, lost or damaged, you need to be able to get hold of the files.
3. Email critical files to yourself. Using one of the online email services, you can keep a copy of your files online and retrieve them when needed. This could be a real life-saver. However, to make it manageable, do this only for your four or five most critical files.
4. Don’t forget your contacts. Synchronize your cellphone or PDA with your computer and export your contact database to a file that can be viewed as plain text. If you need to retrieve any of this information, you do not want to have to import all your contact information into your client’s Outlook just to be able to view it.
5. If you can do it easily, scan your tickets and other travel documentation and make it part of the backup. Often the originals are kept with your laptop, so if that is stolen, you at least have some proof to fall back on.
Following these guidelines could change a business disaster into a mere inconvenience. It only takes a couple of minutes, but could mean the difference between success and failure.
